People - Robert William Russell

Corporal - A.I.F. 2/22 Battalion

Born: 28 February 1920  Essendon, Victoria, Australia.  Died: 1 July 1942.

Son of William Leslie and Ida Francis Russell, of Moonee Ponds, Victoria.

Corporal Robert William Russell was born in Essendon on the 28th February 1920 and died as a prisoner of war on the Montevideo Maru on the 1st of July 1942. He was recently engaged before he too left for Trawool Camp. His training was in process engraving and the graphic arts. The family, including his fiancee, did not have his death confirmed until late in 1945.

Bob along with his brother Jack were very close to their only other sibling, Nancy. They were closely spaced in age and were bound by the strongest of emotional bonds to each other and to their parents. Neither of these men had time to become parents. Bob's family donated a memorial window to the Aberfeldie Methodist Church in memory of the brothers and their friend Orm Copas.
