Places - Memorials | New Ireland - People of the Plaque

On 4 July 2002 a plaque was unveiled at the Kavieng War Memorial to commemorate civilians in New Ireland who lost their lives under Japanese Occupation.

The plaque was donated to the people of New Ireland by relatives in Australia and much research was undertaken by Jim Ridges of Kavieng and others to check the names and compile the roll of honour.

Many New Irelanders, New Guineans & other members of the Chinese & Mixed Race communities whose names are not recorded also suffered & died in New Ireland during the war.

The suffering of indigenous people was especially devasting.

Rest in Peace
